Mobile backhaul, business Ethernet, and residential triple-play are driving the growth of bandwidth demand at a sustained rate of more than 40% a year. Over the next several years, network system vendors will need to introduce switches and routers that have an order of magnitude higher bandwidth density while maintaining the same or even lower levels of power consumption. This will require optical links to become more pervasive and cost-effective. This is where Lightwire’s low-power CMOS Photonics technology will play a significant role. By leveraging mature tools, processes and an existing eco-system of CMOS semiconductors for optics, Lightwire’s technology can enable optical transceivers to be extremely cost-effective. Compared to PN junction based CMOS Photonics modulators implemented by others, Lightwire’s patented SISCAP structure offers an order-of-magnitude improvement in performance. Using optical transceivers having this new capability, system vendors can achieve a substantial increase in port density in switches and routers.
